Who Runs The World?! GIRLS!

Written by Ali Seca on March 7, 2016

As Queen B says, “Who runs the world, GIRLS!” – Happy International Women’s Day to all the fearless, empowering and inspiring women out there! On this exact day, 108 years ago, 15,000 women bravely marched through the streets of New York, standing up for their rights and creating this remarkable day to honour and respect women from all around the world. Each and every day, women contribute so much to our society whether it be at home with their families, at a desk in school or owning the boardroom. This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is “Pledge for Parity”, aiming to help women and girls achieve their ambitions without being seen as less than men, stopping workplace biases, and valuing the difference between men and women. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re honouring some of the powerhouses that inspire us!

Emma Watson

One of our generation’s strong voices of feminism,  Emma was named a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador and delivered a touching speech in front of the United Nations. Watson’s speech introduced a new initiative for gender equality emphasizing the fact that feminism isn’t just a fight for women, and it’s time for men to join the battle!

Michelle Obama

62 million women worldwide are not able to attend school and Michelle Obama has made it her mandate to drive change. Launching the, “Let Girls Learn” initiative, her objective is to ensure adolescent girls get the education they deserve! “As a first lady, a mother, and a human being, I cannot walk away from these girls, and I plan to keep raising my voice on their behalf for the rest of my life.” Michelle’s inspiring and heartfelt words reach out to us all, and showcase a perfect example of the impact that one woman’s voice can have.

Angelina Jolie

Winning the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award in 2015, there is no doubt that Angelina Jolie is humanitarian genius! From advocating for individuals abroad as a representative for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, to being vocal advocate for breast cancer awareness, and helping those affected by natural disasters, there’s not much Jolie hasn’t done to encourage change. The list of Angelina’s inspiring work goes on, showing us that one can be beautiful on the outside, but it is the beauty that shines within us which is truly important!

Here’s to strong, inspiring women! May we know them, may we raise them, may we be them!
